Great Bait and wide open fishing

This past week has been tuff on the side of bait. Larger than average sardine made bass fishing tough so we opted to not get bait for trips early in the week. Some great artificial lure fishing both shallow and deep kept us busy. Friday came around and great bait hit the barge. 4-5” sardine with a mix of 3-5” anchovies. Great chumming power and excellent hook bait. A size 2 and 4 vmc circle hook was the key with no weight added. Good old fashion summer time fly line calico bass fishing with a mix of sandbass bonito and short barracuda were abundant. Great fishing over the weekend with plenty of legal bass coming over the rail and constant action on short bass and other species. Our biggest fish of the weekend still came on the artificial lures and I always urge customers to try them out even while we fish live bait.

Nice Calico on a fly-lined live bait out front of Capistrano Beach.
First calico for young angler on the Daiwa SP Minnow.
Biggest calico of the day on the SP Minnow.
