What is a Calico Bass(Kelp Bass), and how do we catch them?

The Calico Bass is the gateway species to the Southern California saltwater sportfishing scene. For many anglers it's the first fish they caught on a sport boat, pier, or jetty growing up in Southern California. This slow to growing species inhabits waters south of Point Conception to the southern section of the Baja peninsula. A Legal sized Calico Bass (14 inches) is approximately five years old with individuals on the larger end of the species size range being as old as 34. Habitats range from shallow rocky reef within the surf zone, around and in kelp forests, and out to deep water rock structures. they produce great table fare with flakey mild flesh perfect for tacos, ceviche, or as a main dish.

Now that we understand what they are and where they live let's talk about the relationship between our private charter operation and the Calico Bass. These fish are our target species spring through fall, from March to October. Although we do catch them year around, peak season on a normal year for us here in Dana Point is June through September. During this time large congregations of Calico Bass spawn along kelp forests and rock reef structures. Shoulder seasons produce your best chance at a Trophy sized over five pounds, and we usually target these with artificial lures. Most trips while targeting calico bass we try and focus on artificial presentations before moving on to live bait techniques. This usually produces on average a larger model of fish and with an abundance of small fish this gives us the best chance to bring some keepers home. That being said when the time is right nothing is better than fly lining a bait into he kelp or over a reef for these aggressive feeders. Typically when fishing lures we implement a drift style of fishing constantly covering water. While live bait fishing we utilize the anchor to keep us over the reef or backed into the kelp line. Fly-line fishing live bait is and simple as it sounds. With a single hook line and no weight a live sardine or anchovy is hooked gently through the nose and cast behind the boat. Being allowed to free swim toward a large school of bass that have been coaxed up and out of the structure by chumming. Both techniques produce fun action and most are surprised by the strength and tenacity of these beautiful fish.

The calico bass is a great family friendly fish to taget for both begginer and adnvanced anglers. With multiple areas to fish close to our home port of Dana Point I encourage anyone who hasn't, to come out and try fishing for this amazing fish!

Please give me, Capatain Daniel a call with any questions about booking a charter and experiencing it for yourself.
